NOTES BY KIRK VENGE, WINEMAKER Macauley Petite Sirah is always an exciting wine to harvest, ferment, build and bottle. Hailing from 12 year old vines planted in the Trio Vineyard in Yountville, this is a wine that is loaded for the senses. The color is dark enough to be considered black and the aromatics are brooding. An array of black fruits, herbs, terroir and mineral characters fill the glass. On second take, more pronounced red fruit comes forward. Noted as one of the world’s most powerful red wine varietals, this Petite Sirah delivers a mouthful of fresh fruit, firm acid and structural tannin. Though not a bashful wine, the feature focus of this unique wine is its ability to tame its large character into a fleshy and balanced wine. A varietal such as Petite Sirah must find balance and restrain of power while, like in any wine, preserve aromatics and supply acidity to balance tannin and create mouthfeel. I think, cellared correctly, this wine will survive to 2025 and undoubtedly beyond.
